Turkey 2025: Activate eSIM before arrival – how to avoid blocks (Guide)
Summary: Since July 2025, the Turkish regulatory authority BTK has been blocking access to websites/apps of several international travel eSIM providers. Already installed/activated eSIMs continue to work, but new installations or activations in the country may fail. Solution: Buy, install, and activate your eSIM before departure, save QR/installation information offline, and only "turn on data" at your destination.
Why are there these restrictions?
Since July 2025, media, tech portals, and travel sites have reported that BTK is restricting access to apps/websites of several global eSIM providers (e.g., Airalo, Holafly, Nomad, partly Ubigi, among others). This is not a total ban on eSIMs – but travelers often can no longer perform the initial installation/activation in the country. Previously activated profiles continue to work.
Tech reports and industry blogs emphasize the same workaround: install/activate before entry, so the eSIM provides data immediately upon arrival.
The 15-minute plan before departure (at home on Wi-Fi)
- Choose and buy a plan
At VOISIM, select the appropriate Turkey data plan with sufficient buffer.
- Install eSIM (QR or manually)
iPhone: Settings → Cellular/Mobile Data → Add eSIM → Scan QR or enter manually. Android (Pixel/Samsung): Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → Add eSIM and follow the provider's instructions.
- Activate / quick test
If the provider allows, activate the eSIM in advance or perform a quick "attach" test (data on for 1–2 minutes, then off again). This way, the profile is ready to go at your destination.
- Save QR & installation info offline
Take screenshots of the activation page/order, save QR/SM-DP+/activation code as a local file, make email available offline. This way, you are independent if provider pages are blocked in the country.
- Set iPhone/Android switches correctly (avoid fees)
Data line = travel eSIM (VOISIM). Home SIM: Data roaming OFF, so no unexpected roaming costs; SMS/telephony remain reachable.
- APN/Network check
Check if the APN has been set automatically; if not, enter it according to the provider (found in the order email/instructions).
- Download offline package
Save offline maps, translations, tickets, hotel address, transfer info locally. This way, you remain functional even if airport Wi-Fi or portals are acting up.
Arrival in Turkey: 90-second routine
-Turn off airplane mode, turn on mobile data (eSIM only), turn on data roaming for the eSIM.
iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Data = Travel eSIM;
Home SIM Data Roaming OFF.
Android: Select data SIM, turn off roaming for home SIM.
-If no network:
Restart device, manually select network operator, check APN. Check data roaming.
-Optional: quick speed test outdoors
After that, throttle background downloads to save volume.
Common misconceptions – briefly explained
"Is eSIM banned in Turkey?"
No. There is no general eSIM ban. The BTK measures affect access to international provider apps/websites within the country. Previously installed and activated eSIMs continue to function.
"Is it enough to just have the QR code?"
Not necessarily. New installation/initial activation in the country may fail if the app/portal is blocked. Pre-installation and activation are safe.
"Do I need a VPN?"
The recommended way is to do everything in advance. Whether a VPN helps is situational; don't rely on it, but install/activate before departure.
"I've installed but not yet activated – is that enough?"
If the provider supports it, yes. Many recommend a quick pre-attachment test to ensure the profile is truly ready at the destination.
Extra: Secure Dual-SIM Setup (iPhone) – Step-by-Step
Open Settings → Cellular.
Under "SIMs," check that both lines are visible (Home + eSIM).
Set default line for mobile data to VOISIM eSIM.
Deactivate data roaming on the home SIM (only VOISIM uses mobile data).
Activate data roaming on the eSIM VOISIM.
Optional: Check iMessage/FaceTime sender.
